Susan Squier (Penn State University): From Visible Embryo to Graphic Embryo

Another View of the Epigenetic Landscape

07.05.2015 um 16:00 Uhr

Vortrag im Rahmen des Oberseminars "Perspektiven der Wissenschaftsgeschichte"

The egg cell is the central figure of C.H. Waddington's epigenetic landscape--his visual model for expressing the development from genotype to phenotype. In my talk, I will put the egg cell in context within the long history of making embryos visible, where it is mediated, animated, and scaled (terms whose meaning I will explore). Finally, I will conclude by examining a contemporary mode of making embryos visible that I call the graphic embryo. This new phenomenon remediates the embryo in the epigenetic landscape. That is, it both references earlier modes of mediation and it remedies current medical modes of dealing with embryos.
