On a warm July afternoon in 1854, the bell of the "Frauenkirche" rang throughout Munich with a mournful echo signaling that yet another soul had lost their fight against cholera. It soon became clear that previous quarantine measures were ultimately ineffective and commissions were
formed to find an underlying cause of the illness. Cholera outbreaks, like the 1854 epidemic, provided a unique opportunity for district
physicians to implement new public health initiatives. In this talk, Alyssa Culp will discuss how fear and an administrative effort to contain cholera, gave way to the expansion of modern morgues beyond Munich to the provinces of Bavaria.
