Vladimir Mikhailovich Bekhterev (1857-1927) was one of the leading figures in the Russian human, medical and behavioural sciences at the turn of the twentieth century. He was an outstandingly dynamic and charismatic individual, an innovative neuroscientist and authoritative psychiatrist, a prominent and well-connected public figure, a tireless and remarkably able organizer, a veritable entrepreneur of science.
This paper will examine, firstly, the strategic position that the study of specifically child development played in Bekhterev’s objective psychology/reflexology. Secondly, it will analyse the distinctive place that Bekhterev’s objective psychology/reflexology, as a scientific movement, occupied in the Russian/Soviet field of child science. It will follow the rise and fall of Bekhterevian reflexology in the context of early Soviet child science, focusing especially on its relationship to the state-supported framework of ‘paedology’. The analysis of the field of Russian child science in this period will draw in particular on the notion of scientific/intellectual movements (SIMs) developed by Scott Frickel and Neil Gross (2005).
