Alyssa Culp (Knoxville)

The Volksmedizin Vanguard: District Physicians and Local Healers in Nineteenth-Century Bavaria

11.07.2019 16:00 Uhr – 18:00 Uhr

Over the nineteenth century, medicine in Germany “professionalized,” and academic physicians gradually wrested authority and control over health and healing practices. Academic physicians worked with the Bavarian government to implement public health initiatives across Germany, but these initiatives brought into question the very definition of medicine itself. What or who defined healing? How did new categories like Volksmedizin change healing? Did rural patients follow these constructions and initiatives? If so, to what extent? In this lecture, Alyssa Culp will discuss how nineteenth century academic physicians and rural Bavarians conceptualized and understood healing and disease.
