Martina Kastnerová (Pilsen): Transmission of Knowledge: Stammbücher and Emblem Books in Philip Sidney's (1554-1586) Intellectual Circle

During his journey to the Continent in 1572–1577, Philip Sidney (1554–1586), an iconic figure of Early Modern literary culture, established numerous interesting intellectual contacts. The people he met included famous personalities of the nascent Modern European botany and medicine, but also various authors, publishers, and collectors of emblems, a genre that was at the time fast gaining in popularity. Emblematics may have actually inspired Sidneyʼs thoughts on the functionality of expressing oneself through literary images and on learning through examples. Furthermore, Sidney’s case illustrates how early modern knowledge was transmitted through intellectual circles and networks of correspondence, and how emblem books and other sources, such as stammbuchs and dissertation theses, shed light on the everyday processes of knowledge circulation and intellectual communication.
