What is Scientific Philosophy? Charles W. Morris and the Fortune of Logical Empiricists in the United States

Among the American philosophers who actively contributed to the success of logical empiricists in the United States, Charles W. Morris (1901–79) is a pivotal figure (Richardson 2008, 256-8). Despite his historical significance, few studies interrogate the reasons for his success and for his interest in logical empiricism. This work seeks to recover the early Morris from this neglect and to investigate his early interest in the logical empiricists’ philosophy. In this context, reaching an agreement on what “scientific philosophy” meant was often postponed in the interest of more general methodological goals on what it meant to do philosophy
