Wir laden herzlich ein zu Tamar Novicks Vortrag "Evasive Species: The Convoluted Battle for the Syrian Ostrich":
This paper unravels the efforts to and consequences of defining the Syrian ostrich as a separate subspecies in the 1910s. It demonstrates how those were deeply entangled with expanding European military and diplomatic networks in the Middle-East. The dramatic militarization of the region resulted in the ultimate extinction of the bird. Its extinction, in turn, along with the very evasive nature of the ostrich, contributed to stabilizing the animal as a subspecies long after the trinomial age, a period in which the very idea of subspecies took hold.
Der Vortrag findet im Rahmen des Oberseminars "Perspektiven der Wissenschaftsgeschichte" statt.
