Does the new postgenomic orientation of research on development, inheritance and evolution challenge the age-old distinction between nature and culture? Isn't postgenomics showing that nature and culture are so entangled that they cannot be separated? Shouldn’t we eliminate the divide therefore from scientific reasoning about humans? Against its critics, this talk will defend the age-old nature-culture divide as adequate – despite the entanglement at the developmental, epigenetic and evolutionary level. The claim is: it is ontologically possible and can be epistemically fruitful to distinguish nature from culture.
Maria Kronfeldner is Associate Professor for Philosophy of Humanities and Social Sciences at the Central European University in Budapest.
