"In this talk, I bring together the cultural history of sexuality with contemporaneous ideas in evolutionary theory. My research shows how biologists in the 1980s and 1990s decades tended to use evolutionary theories of homosexuality to clarify heterosexual gender norms. In doing so, they pitted themselves against left-leaning defenders of environmentalist explanations of human behavior more generally. In short, the politics of professional debates over the evolution of sexuality aligned in the wrong direction if the goal was to use evolutionary accounts of animal behavior as a tool of legitimation." - Erika Milam
