This talk examines the gradual rise to prominence of enzymological approaches to the study of metabolism in the American context from the late 1930s to the early 1950s. By focusing on institutional and intellectual developments in three emerging geographical centers of enzymology—New York, St. Louis, and Madison—this presentation reflects upon shifting trends in metabolism research across the prewar, World War II, and immediate postwar periods. It also seeks to reconstruct social and academic networks of enzyme researchers by tracing the movements of people and resources among these three cities.
